Kevin Phillips: Phoenix Nights and the Mighty Quinn & Other Socio Exclusives

YESTERDAY I introduced you to Kevin Phillips during a hugely enjoyable Big Interview, in which the former Sunderland striker talks about how he came to win the European Golden Boot.

He received that glittering trophy front of a packed crowd at the Stadium of Light – and he explains how the words of the great Jimmy Greaves were key to helping Kevin outscore the top strikers in European football.

In this extract, Kevin talks about his Sunderland days and his formidable partnership with Niall Quinn; the expert man-management of Peter Reid; Nicky Summerbee’s wand of a foot; Saturday nights out and Monday afternoons in the pub.

But this is only a little piece of the full, 90-minute podcast. The full interview is available to Socios (there are over 600 them now, and you can join the party by clicking here) and is just one of the podcasts we have been producing for them.

Robbie Keane: Hunger Games & Other Socio Exclusives

YESTERDAY I introduced you to Robbie Keane during an epic Big Interview, in which the former Spurs striker railed against the way that increasing wages have diminished the desire of young, talented footballers to make it in the game.

That drive to succeed still burns in Robbie – if you have any doubt then I urge you to listen to this podcast.

In this extract, Robbie becomes riled by his encounters with players who are not as determined to win as he is. He also identifies those who do share his passion to succeed – players like Roy Keane and former Spurs team-mate Luka Modric.

Jamie Murray: Horseplay, Hibees And Hulk

Jamie Murray is a two-time Wimbledon champion; an Australian Open winner; and simply one of the best doubles players in the world.

But what about his other sporting achievements? Well, in this Big Interview, Jamie reveals that he once held the world championship belt in wrestling – beating his brother Andy in a ladder match to claim the title no less.

Jamie is also a capable footballer and once even gave Brazil international Hulk the runaround in a game of football tennis.

Jamie talks about honing his skills at a park in Dunblane, being attracted to the brand of football played by Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, and – of course – Jamie mentions a certain Scottish Cup final victory by his team, the glorious Hibees.

He also picks his perfect five-a-side team from the ATP tour.

The Big Interview Presents… Cricket

Now, I have gone into every Big Interview knowing that football was going to be the main topic of conversation. But there have been times when I’ve spoken to a guest who talked just as passionately about cricket – so much so, that we have dedicated a special clip show to the sport.

We begin with perhaps the most talented cricketer to have featured among our guests: Mr Phillip Neville. Phil was facing fast balls and yorkers, delivered by some recognised international players, when he was just eight years old. He lived to tell the tale on The Big Interview.

A young Matt Le Tissier was also considered to be a skilled wicketkeeper and a prodigious batsman. He might have made it in the sport had he not happened to be a pretty capable footballer too.

Phil also describes the mental toughness he saw in the Australian cricketers he played with and explains how that helped him in his football career, while Chris Sutton argues that batsman is the most psychologically demanding role in all sport.

And we give the last word to Gary Neville as he pays tribute to the late, great cricket commentator Richie Benaud.

Ledley King: Long Live The King And More Socio Exclusives

LAST week I introduced you to Ledley King during an hour-long Big Interview in which the former Spurs captain talked about about where he came from – the place and the people (including Ashley Cole and John Terry).

The podcast was also about the ties that bind him to Tottenham – his memories of The Lane, the big games he was a big part of, and the players and managers of his era as a Tottenham legend and one of the best defenders in Premier League history.

In this extract, Ledley talks about one of those managers, Juan Ramos, and describes the strict fitness regime implemented by the Spaniard during his reign at The Lane.
