Owen Hargreaves: Scholes, Gerrard & England’s Golden Generation

In the second part of my interview with Owen Hargreaves we discuss England’s Golden Generation, a fabulous group of players which included the likes of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, and Owen himself.

Big things were expected of that generation of England players but they were unable to triumph at a major finals. Owen talks about the relationships between the players, the tactics employed by the managers, and gives his opinion on why they fell short.

And, of course, we talk more about his time at Bayern Munich and Manchester United. What was the main difference between the clubs? Owen suggests that was probably the way they tackled each other at training.

Owen Hargreaves: Bayern, Basketball & The Brilliance Of Zidane

In the first part of my chat with two-time Champions League winner Owen Hargreaves, we talk about his time at Bayern Munich and what it was like coming through at one of world football’s most celebrated clubs.

You’ll hear stories from Champions League finals – two he played in, one he didn’t – and fascinating accounts of what it was like to go toe-to-toe with Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane. Owen will introduce you to big characters like Stefan Effenberg and Ottmar Hitzfeld, too.

The former footballer also talks about growing up in Canada and why, as a kid, he idolised basketball superstar Michael Jordan. I found this conversation with Owen absolutely fascinating and I’m certain that you will too.

Joleon Lescott: Kompany, Aguero & The Day City Won The League

Hola Big Interview listeners!

Last week I spent an hour in the company of former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott.

So what did we talk about? Well, you will hear Joleon describe the historic moment when City won the league title in 2012, as well as key players like Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.

And, thanks to our sponsors Bet365, you will also learn why Louis Saha was the toughest striker he ever faced.

This was a fascinating chat and I guarantee that you will love it, whether you are a City fan or not.

Alan Smith: Wright, Wrongs & a European Cup

Hola Big Interview listeners!

In part two of my chat with Alan Smith, the Arsenal legend takes us to Copenhagen and Arsenal’s famous victory over Parma in the final of the 1994 European Cup Winners’ Cup. Alan will recall the famous names among that glittering Italian side – Zola, Asprilla and Brolin to name three – and, of course, his own wonderful, decisive goal.

That should have been the crowning moment of his career. But, as Alan will explain, he had by then lost his confidence and was no longer enjoying his football. We talk about why that was. It’s an important message.

And we also discuss the arrival at Highbury of Ian Wright and why Alan was unable to click with his new team-mate on the pitch, as well as Alan’s prominent role in the FIFA computer games.

Our Socios get to listen to this episode ad-free (there are over 700 of them now, and you can join the party by clicking here) and this is just one of the podcasts we have been producing for them. This month they get to listen to former United striker Brian McClair!

Alan Smith: Arsenal, Anfield & The Boys of ’89

Hola Big Interview listeners!

When I sat down to chat with Alan Smith during the launch of his autobiography Heads Up we talked Arsenal icons, a title win and triumph in a European Cup final. It was so good that I have split the whole interview into two parts.

So, in Part One, you will learn about George Graham, a title-winning coach at Arsenal and a man feared by many of his players. You’ll hear about his laborious training methods and hair-raising team talks.

And Alan also relives his goal at Anfield which helped steal the league title away from a formidable Liverpool side in 1989. It is a game which he describes as the most iconic in English football history.
